Quotation Marks – Direct Quotes

Quotation marks–direct quotes: Use double quotation marks to indicate direct quotes.  Use no quotation marks for indirect quotes or paraphrases.

 

Direct Quote:

Consider the words of John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

 

Indirect Quote:

John F. Kennedy was known for saying you should not ask for what your country can do for you but instead what you can do for your country.
