Subject-Verb Agreement, Collective Nouns

Subject-verb agreement, collective nouns: Because collective nouns are counted as one, they are singular and require a singular verb.  Sometimes the result of a correct subject-verb agreement with a collective noun sounds incorrect; the second sentence below is an example that might seem incorrect at first glance.

 

Words like audience, family, team, committee, group are collective nouns

 The family is getting restless.

 The Navy SEALS is an elite operating force.
