-ed, -en, or -ing endings with participial adjectives:  Don’t forget to add the proper ending to participial adjectives.

 

Put an –ed or –en ending on participial adjectives that characterize the experience of subject.

 The boss was not amuse by the impersonation of him.  (Incorrect)

 The boss was not amused by the impersonation of him.  (Correct)

 

His foot was swole the next morning after his fall. (Incorrect)

His foot was swollen the next morning after his fall.  (Correct)

 

Put an –ing ending on participial adjectives that characterize the cause of an experience.

The insults were damage to Fred’s self-esteem.  (Incorrect)

The insults were damaging to Fred’s self-esteem.  (Correct)
