Subject-Verb Agreement, Subject Follows the Verb

Jared Aragona

Subject-verb agreement, subject follows the verb: In some cases, the subject of the sentence comes after the verb, but the subject and verb still need to agree. Switching the sentences up to check yourself with There is/There are sentences is a good trick.

Questions:

Are birds really the descendants of dinosaurs?

(Birds are really the descendants of dinosaurs.)

Switching the sentences up to check yourself with There is/There are sentences is a good way to test whether or not your subject and verb agree.

 “There is/There are” sentences:

There is an awful smell in this lab.

(An awful smell is in this lab.)

There are fifteen old cannonballs in the courtyard.

(Fifteen cannonballs are in the courtyard)
