Commas with introductory word or words: Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.

 

Introductory clause:

When Joe was finally ready to go to the library, he realized his wallet was gone.

 

Introductory phrases: 

Near a small stream at the bottom of the canyon, we discovered the fossils.

 

Introductory word: 

Nevertheless, Bob was overjoyed when he learned he had earned and A on the test.

 

Introductory phrase that modifies the subject: 

Expressing her interest at the experiment, Vanessa said, “Wow!”
