Prologue

Our information-driven lives are powered by telecommunications and networking, the backbone of modern connectivity. In addition, our connection-driven lives today are engineered through the convergence of these two ecosystems. In this textbook, we examine these digital networks through networking models, protocols, systems, and tools

  • Networking refers specifically to the systems and technologies used to interconnect devices, enabling them to share data, communicate, and access resources within local or global infrastructures. It emphasizes the structure, protocols, and tools for creating and managing these connections, such as routers, switches, and Ethernet cables. We will use networking as the general term to refer to digital communications.

  • Telecommunications is a broader term that encompasses the electronic transmission of information over significant distances using various technologies like radio waves, fiber optics, and satellites. It includes all types of communication—voice, data, video—and focuses on the exchange of information across distances rather than the specific infrastructure used.

Consider how networking and telecommunications impacts your daily life. For example, your smartphone seamlessly accesses the Internet through wireless networks, enabling instant communication, social media interactions, and access to vast information. As you read this introduction, data packets are traversing undersea fiber optic cables, seamlessly connecting continents and enabling global collaboration. Numerous networking technologies, from the wired Ethernet connections in local area networks, to the advanced routing protocols that move data across the Internet, enable other types of network traffic, including video streaming, remote video conferencing, and even autonomous systems such as robotic control. Through the evolution of wireless standards leading to the integration of 5G networks, modern telecommunications systems are an indispensable part of any networked environment.
These digital systems matter to us because they are foundational to modern communication, innovation, and business operations. By mastering these principles and tools, you will be equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of telecommunications as a whole, and contribute to its ongoing evolution.
