Downtown San Antonio/El barrio de San Antonio

Downtown San Antonio near Mission Concepción
  • How is downtown San Antonio? In Spanish, downtown translates as ‘barrio’ or ‘el ‘centro’ of the city of San Antonio. But, do you know what a ‘barrio’ is?
  • We can define the word ‘barrio’ as: Part of a population relatively big that contains a social group that is described as spontaneous, and has character and a peculiar social, economic or ethnic status that is easy to identify. For example: to visit Downtown San Antonio. “Visitar el barrio del centro de San Antonio’. 2) a ward, quarter, or district of a city or town in a Spanish-speaking country.

We can also mention that the word ‘barrio’ has been used in different contexts in Latino-América. For example: barriada o colonia, o vecindad. Which means neighborhood.

  • Now that you already know the meaning of the word ‘barrio’, how would you describe your own ‘barrio’? The place where you were born or you were raised. Where do you identify as your home? Please share your thoughts with your classmates.
