Actividad B: Explorando los iconos de UTSA

Objetivo

The goal of this activity is to encourage students, especially Hispanic students, to reflect on the UTSA buildings, murals, paintings, and statues they encounter on their way to class. By analyzing these icons and reflecting on their experiences, students will develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of their identity and cultural representation within the university context.

(El objetivo de esta actividad es motivar a los estudiantes, especialmente a los hispanos, a reflexionar sobre los edificios, murales, pinturas y estatuas de UTSA que encuentran de camino a clases. Al analizar estos íconos y reflexionar sobre sus propias experiencias, los estudiantes desarrollarán habilidades de pensamiento crítico y obtendrán una comprensión más profunda de su identidad y representación cultural dentro del contexto universitario.)

Instrucciones:

1. Your task is to create a map or timeline of the buildings, murals, paintings inside and outside the buildings and statues you pass by on your way to class.
   • To create the map, you can use Google My Maps or StoryMapJS (https://storymap.knightlab.com).
2. Take a picture of yourself in front of the icon and answer the following questions in the language of your choice:
   • ¿Qué representa o simboliza el ícono?
   • ¿Qué significado histórico o cultural tiene?
   • ¿Cómo contribuye el ícono al ambiente general de la universidad?
   • ¿Cómo te hace sentir el ícono a ti, como estudiante hispano?
3. Your map or timeline should have at least 5 icons of the university.
4. Finally, make a proposal for a new mural or monument that celebrates Hispanic culture and its contribution to the university.
