Actividad A: De compras en el supermercado
Shopping at the supermarket
Instructions:
For this project you will visit a Hispanic supermarket in the local community. You can choose between La Michoacana meat market, La Culebra meat market (these are only a few examples of supermarkets in the city of San Antonio) or stop by your local grocery store and take a look at the Hispanic aisle.
- Once you get there, describe what you see, the different types of Latin products, it can be food, spices, accessories or utensils to cook or to decorate a home, the employees that work there, what language (s) do they speak? only English, Spanish, or maybe both?
- Choose a product that is new to you. Describe it with specific details, how to use it, what is the purpose of the product, why did you choose such product, is it a common ingredient or cooking utensil necessary to cook a Latin dish, can you find it in a regular grocery store?
- Take a picture of the chosen product or utensil. Take a selfie with the product where you are showing such product.
- Write a short essay of 120-150 words in the variety of English, Spanish or Spanglish, in which you feel most comfortable about your experience at the store.
- Don’t forget to submit your two pictures of the product along with your essay.
- You do have the option to create a short video of 3-5 minutes describing your experience at the supermarket without the need to write the essay. In the video, you must show your face and explain with detail your experience and the product of your choice.
In this manner you can put into practice what you have learn in this chapter.
For example: A new product for me is a flour called Maseca. It’s corn flour and is used to make corn tortillas, gorditas, sopes, among other dishes. It can be used as your main dish or as a side like the tortillas. This brand has different types of flour, blue flour to make blue corn tortillas, flour for tamales and even a gluten free option. It was easy to find at the local grocery store in the Hispanic aisle. You can also find it at a Hispanic food market were they have a larger variety. I stopped at… the environment of the store was… the employes…
