If you are staying the extra day in Florence, consider some of the following:
- Bargello (old city jail, now a fantastic sculpture museum),
- Santa Maria Novella (the great Dominican church of Florence, an artistic treasure) as well as its charming, antiquated pharmacy,
- Palazzo della Signoria (the old town hall of Florence)
- San Marco monastery, where Cosimo dei Medici went to repent his sin of usury; it has many simple but very beautiful frescoes by Fra Angelico. A very peaceful place. In the refectory is the gorgeous Cenacolo (Last Supper) by Ghirlandaio
- L’Ospedale degli Innocenti, with its beautiful arcades designed by Brunelleschi and its rondels of babies (the “Innocents”) by Andrea della Robbia. The small museum located in this former orphanage is one of my very favorites.
- Museo Galileo, which contains many artifacts from the famous scientist and others
- Santa Maria del Carmine’s Brancacci Chapel, with its wonderful frescoes by Massaccio
