The author would like to recommend using the Musubi Japanese Reading & Writing (Hiragana and Katakana OER workbook published by the University of Hawaii, Manoa) before one begins to proceed with Step-by-Step Japanese 1.

Step-by-Step Japanese 1 is designed to guide beginner users to learn basic Japanese, one step at a time, using scaffolding strategies to build language proficiency and global competence.

It can be used for self-guided study or guided study in an academic classroom.
