Grammar Notes

Particle に (ni)

Particle に can be used as a direction marker to describe “to” a place one will go.

The general word order in Japanese is as follows.

Without a time word:

Person は place に verb
(topic marker) (direction marker)
田中さん は 東京 に 行きます。
Tanaka san wa toukyou ni ikimasu
Mr. Tanaka Tokyo to (will) go
Mr. Tanaka will go to Tokyo.

With a time word:

Person は time word に Place に verb
(topic marker) (time marker) (direction marker)
田中さん は  金曜日 に 東京 に 行きます。
Tanaka san wa kinyoubi ni toukyou ni ikimasu
Mr. Tanaka Friday on Tokyo to (will) go
Mr. Tanaka will go to Tokyo on Friday.

*Note: the word order between the person and the time word can be switched. However, remember to move the particle with the word accordingly.
