Grammar Notes

Comparing 何がありますか, 何がいますか, and 誰がいますか

The phrases “何がありますか” (nani ga arimasu ka?) and “何がいますか？” (nani ga imasu ka?) both use the question word “何” (nani) which means “what” in English. However, they have slightly different meanings depending on the context.

何がありますか Nani ga arimasu ka? This sentence is used to ask “What is there?” or “What is available?” in a certain place or situation.

For example, if you point at a friend’s backpack that is full. You can uase “何がありますか。” to ask things are inside it.
何がいますか Nani ga imasu ka? This phrase is often used to inquire about living things or animals.

For example, if you visit a zoo, you might ask the guide “何がいますか？” to ask what animals are there in the zoo.

On the other hand, “誰がいますか” (dare ga imasu ka?) uses the question word “誰” (dare) which means “who” in English.

誰がいますか Dare ga imasu ka? This phrase is used to ask “Who is there?” or “Who is present?” in a certain place or situation.

For example, if you hear someone talking in the next room. You might ask “誰がいますか。” to inquire about people or individuals in a certain place or situation
