1 山田: 毎日、何時に起きますか。 

2 ジョンソン: 五時に起きます。 

3 山田: 早いですね。私は八時に起きます。 

4 ジョンソン: 毎日、何時に寝ますか。 

5 山田: 十二時に寝ます。 

6 ジョンソン: 遅いですね。私は十時に寝ます。

3 Yamada: Hayai desu ne. Watashi wa hachiji ni okimasu.

6: Jonson: Osoi desu ne. Watashi wa juji ni nemasu.
English translation
 1 Yamada: What time do you wake up every day?

2 Johnson: I wake up at 5:00.

3 Yamada: That is early! I wake up at 8:00.

4 Johnson: What time do you go to bed every day?

5 Yamada: I go to bed at 12:00.

6: Johnson: That is late. I go to bed at 10:00.

Grammar Notes

Particle に (ni)

Particle に can be used as a time marker to describe at a specific time, on a specific day, or in a specific month or year.

The general word order in Japanese is as follows.

Without a direct object:

Person は time word time word に verb
(topic marker) (large time unit) (small time unit) (time marker)
田中さん は 明日 八時 に 起きます。
Tanaka san wa ashita hachi ji ni okimasu
Mr. Tanaka tomorrow 8:00 at (will) get up
Mr. Tanaka will get up at 8:00 tomorrow.

The word order between the person and the time word can be switched. However, remember to move the particle with the time word accordingly.

(large time unit) (small time unit) (time marker) (topic marker)
明日 八時 に 田中さん  は 起きます。
ashita hachi ji ni Tanaka san wa okimasu
tomorrow 8:00 at (will) get up
Mr. Tanaka will get up at 8:00 tomorrow.

 

With a direct object:

Person は time word time word に object を verb
(topic marker) (large time unit) (small time unit) (time marker)
田中さん は 明日 八時 に パン を 食べます。
Tanaka san wa ashita hachi ji ni pan o tabemasu
Mr. Tanaka tomorrow 8:00 at bread (will) eat
Mr. Tanaka will eat bread at 8:00 tomorrow.

Again, the word order between the person and the time words can be switched.
