Grammar Notes

〜じゃないです (janai desu)

The negation form of です(desu) is じゃないです (janai desu).

For example,

これは もえのほん です。
Kore wa Moe no hon desu
This is Moe’s book.
これは もえのほん じゃないです。
Kore wa taka san no hon desu
This is not Moe’s book.

 

Variations of NOUN じゃないです (janai desu).
NOUN ではないです (dewa nai desu) similar to じゃないです
NOUN じゃありません (ja arimasen) more formal than じゃないです
NOUN ではありません (dewa arimasen) formal, written style

NOTE: じゃ is the contraction form of では. (In English, “isn’t” is the contraction form of “is not”.)
