Culture notes – Japanese restaurants

Food types

There are many types of restaurants in Japan. In addition to Japanese restaurants, restaurants that serve Western food and fast food are also very popular in Japan.  Below is a list of common Japanese restaurants that one might encounter when visiting Japan

Sushi restaurants, including conveyer-belt sushi restaurants with tablets that one can order dishes which would then be delivered on a conveyer-belt right in front of the customers

Noodle restaurants that serve ramen or soba

Yakitori restaurants: they serve meat on skewers, sometimes with inner organs

Izakaya: also known as Japanese-style pubs that serve small plates of food

Teppanyaki: food cooked on a large scale of an iron griddle and usually the customers would sit around the griddle for the food to be served to them by the chefs in front of them

Sukiyaki or shabushabu restaurants: food cooked in a hot pot with an assortment of meat, vegetables, tofu, etc.

Kaiseki restaurant: Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal that features seasonal and beautifully presented dishes. Kaiseki restaurants often have a formal and elegant atmosphere and can be quite expensive.

Seat types

Zashiki: usually on the tatami floor or hardwood floor with a seat cushion, one has to sit with their legs bent

Kotatsu Shiki: usually on the tatami floor or hardwood floor with a seat cushion with a hole in the ground

Kaunta- seki (counter seating):

Tachigui: eating while standing up at the counter or a stand-alone table, no seats are provided

Don’t forget to remove your shoes before entering the dining area that is with tatami mats or hardwood floors.
