Grammar Notes

趣味は何ですか (shumi wa nan desu ka?)

趣味は何ですか (shumi wa nan desu ka?) is another X wa Y desu sentence pattern.

X is 趣味, hobby.

Y is 何, what.

Literally, it means “As for your hobby, what is it?” or “What is your hobby?”

When replying to the question, one would replace 何 with a hobby name.

 

AはBがすきです (A wa B ga  suki desu)

When describing A likes B, one can use the following sentence pattern:

A は Bが すきです
A wa B ga suki desu
A likes B.

For example:

ジョンソンさん は テニスが すきです
Jonson san wa tenisu ga suki desu
Ms. Johnson likes tennis. (Note: B mentioned here is a hobby which can be a noun, one single word.)

Another example:

ジョンソンさん は テレビを  みること が すきです
Jonson san wa terebi o miru koto ga suki desu
Ms. Johnson likes to watch TV. (Note: B can be an activity that involves a noun and a verb. In this case, “to watch TV”,  “watching TV”, or “TV watching”.
