Module 17.2 Culture notes

Culture notes: Telling time in Japan

Japan uses a 24-hour clock system, also known as military time. In Japan, this system is commonly used in transportation schedules, including train, bus, and airline timetables, as well as in official documents, business appointments, and other formal settings.

The 24-hour clock system eliminates ambiguity and confusion that can arise with the 12-hour clock system, which uses “AM” and “PM” to indicate morning and afternoon/evening hours, respectively. In Japan, the 24-hour clock system is widely understood and used by the general population, making it easier to coordinate schedules and avoid misunderstandings.

So, when you check a train timetable in Japan, you will typically see times listed in the 24-hour format. For example, 13:00 would represent 1:00 PM and 17:30 would represent 5:30 PM.

It’s important to note that Japanese train timetables are known for their punctuality and precision, so it is advisable to be familiar with the 24-hour clock system when planning your travel in Japan.
