Grammar Notes

か (ka)

か (ka), a particle, serves as a question marker. It When it is added to the end of a statement, it changes the statement into a yes-no question.

Also, when asking a question in Japanese, the intonation at the end of the sentence rises slightly to indicate that it is a question. This rise in intonation is often accompanied by a slight lengthening of the final vowel sound.

For example,

Japanese  Romanization English translation
田中さんです。 Tanaka san desu. This is Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss Tanaka.
田中さんですか。  Tanaka san desu ka? Are you Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss Tanaka?

or Is this Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss Tanaka?
