Grammar Notes

1. お名前 は (onamaewa)

名前 (namae) means “name”.

名前 (onamae): お (o), a prefix, is added to 名前 to make the speech polite when referring to another person’s name.

名前 (onamae wa) means “Your name?” which is a question.

2. Particle は (wa)

, a “topic marker” particle, follows the topic of the sentence. In this case, “name”.

名前 (onamae wa?) literally means “Your name?”

Note: topic marker は  is written using は (ha), but pronounced as “wa”. Also, note わ (wa) is never used as a particle and only appears as a part of a word in Japanese, such as わたし (watashi, I).

Write 名前 (onamae wa?) to ask for someone’s name is incorrect.

3. よろしくおいします
よろしくおいします (yoroshiku onegai shimasu) is a greeting similar to はじめまして (hajimemashite).

It can be loosely translated as “how do you do” or “nice to meet you”. However, literally, it means “please treat me well/kindly” or “I look forward to your support”.

4. Word order in Japanese

One can use はじめまして (hajimemashite) and よろしくおいします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) in the same sentence.

In a self-introduction, はじめまして (hajimemashite) can precede one’s name or follow after it, but よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) always has to follow after one’s name. In addition, よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) usually occurs at the end of the self-introduction speech. See examples below:

はじめまして、

田中です。

よろしくお願いします。

Hajimemashite,

Tanaka desu.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

How do you do!

I am Tanaka.

Nice to meet you!

田中です、

はじめまして。

よろしくお願いします。

Tanaka desu,

Hajimemashite.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

I am Tanaka.

How do you do!

Nice to meet you.

In a different context, よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) can also be used to ask for someone’s help or assistance which means “I would appreciate your help with this.” or “I am counting on you.”
