Preface
This collection is intended for use with a Co-requisite course, pairing a concurrent MAT 1043 – Introduction to Math(Quantitative Reasoning) (TXCCN MAT 1332) with an NCBO (Non-Course Based Option) support course. UTSA’s MAT 1043 courses utilize Dana Center math pathways materials. This book is designed to supplement the MAT materials and provide a free, opensource option for students to reference in the NCB support course.
The arrangement of materials within the modules is designed to support the Lessons covered in the MAT course. As a result the sequence may not appear as cohesive compared to a traditional developmental textbook. It generally follows our course sequence for NCB, which is a two day a week (50 minute) course that occurs on alternate days to the MAT course. (i.e. MAT 1043 may be MWF, and NCB TR).
This book utilizes topics from modules in OpenStax PreAlgebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Contemporary Mathematics., Pre-calculus, Biology, and Introductory Statistics collections.
This collection is intended for developmental students taking a Co-requisite course in math for a non-stem degree pathway.
Coverage and Scope
By design, the support course in our Co-requisite model emphasizes “Just-in-time” support of topics discussed in the related math course. It is not meant to be a complete review of all topics from earlier developmental math courses like Elementary or Intermediate Algebra. As a result, each chapter is arranged to review only those topics needed to understand concepts discussed in the specific math course chapter it supports. The material is presented as a sequence of modules tied to lessons of the MAT 1043 course. The order of topics was planned to support progression throughout the course (by providing foundational concepts related to the Lesson Topics, and/or previewing material for Lessons), and to facilitate a thorough understanding of each concept.
- Chapter 1: Basics of Numbers, Decimals, Equations, Expressions and Election Math
Reviews and supports Lessons 1A-D of MAT 1043. - Chapter 2: Data and Central tendency
Reviews and supports Lessons 2A-2C and 3A-3C of MAT 1043. - Chapter 3: Fractions, Percentages, Ratios, and Probabilities
- Reviews and supports Lessons 4A-4B of MAT 1043. Although some overlap with concepts from 3A-C will occur.
- Chapter 4: Unit rates, Conversions, and Weighted Average
- Reviews and supports Lessons 5A-6B of MAT 1043.
- Chapter 5: Applications with Ratios and Proportional relationships
- Reviews and supports Lessons Lessons 7A-7F and 8C.
- Chapter 6: Linear Relationships
- Reviews and supports Lessons 8A-8B of MAT 1043.
- Chapter 7: Growth and Data
- Reviews and supports Lessons Linear Regression/Scatter plot for Lessons 8D-9D; Exponential growth for Lessons 10A-10B; logistic growth for 11A-E; and Sinusoidal functions for 12A-B.
All chapters incorporate multiple topics, the titles of which can be viewed in the Topics Covered box at the start of each module.
