Unit 4 | Level Up Your Future and Be Career-Ready with Generative AI
Section 4.2: Generative AI and Strategic Skills
Skill-Based Credentialing and Certifications
Building Communication and Professionalism with GenAI
Communication is one of the most sought-after skills in the job market. GenAI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini can help you practice clear communication by drafting professional emails, preparing talking points for interviews, or tailoring your résumé to specific job descriptions. But professionalism means going one step further—acknowledging GenAI’s role. For example, you might write in a cover letter: “Drafted initial résumé language with GenAI assistance, then revised for clarity and alignment with employer needs.”
Pause & Reflect
Think of one email or message you’ve sent recently where you struggled with tone. How could GenAI help you test multiple versions before sending?
Critical Thinking, Leadership, and GenAI Ethics
GenAI can’t replace your judgment—it’s a mirror and amplifier of your thinking. When you use GenAI to draft an argument for a paper or create data visualizations, your role is to question: Does this make sense? Is it biased? What’s missing? Critical thinking is not about accepting GenAI’s answer but interrogating it, comparing with sources, and making your own decision. This aligns with the AAC&U Critical Thinking VALUE Rubric, which values explanation of issues, use of evidence, and influence of context.
Leadership, too, grows here. A leader models responsible GenAI use, setting the tone for teams. For example, you might say: “Let’s use Perplexity to gather initial sources, but we’ll cross-check with peer-reviewed articles before finalizing.”
Ask GenAI to summarize a controversial issue (e.g., climate change solutions). Then, fact-check with a peer-reviewed article. How did your critical thinking shape the outcome?
