Unit 1 | Generative AI and Its Relevance in Today’s World
Welcome to Unit 1
Arcolin, Claudia; What is Artificial Intelligence?; Publisher: Lumen5/Panopto; Published Date: 08/20/25; Found at: What is Artificial Intelligence?
Learning Objectives
By the end of this section, you will be able to:
- Describe what GenAI is and how it’s used in higher education.
- Identify ways GenAI is being integrated into learning experiences around the world.
- Reflect on your personal approach to using GenAI responsibly in your academic work.
Together, these objectives form the foundation for a Level 1 or foundational GenAI literacy credential that includes:
- Knowledge acquisition (what GenAI is).
- Contextual awareness (how GenAI is used in learning).
- Ethical and reflective practice (how you use GenAI responsibly).
Skill-Based Credential Alignment
A skill-based alignment demonstrates how the learning objectives in a course directly relate to real, demonstrable skills. Instead of just saying “what you will learn, it highlights what you will be able to do”, and how those abilities map to recognized categories such as knowledge, application, reflection, or professional practice.
For example, if you learn what GenAI is, the skill-based alignment clarifies that you are building foundational knowledge. If you practice reflecting on your own use of GenAI, that aligns with ethical and reflective practice.
The learning objectives of this first unit of the course form the foundation for a Level 1: Foundational AI Literacy Credential, which includes:
-
Knowledge Acquisition: Understanding what GenAI is and how it connects to higher education.
-
Contextual Awareness: Exploring how GenAI is shaping learning experiences around the world.
-
Ethical and Reflective Practice: Developing a responsible approach to using GenAI in your own academic work.
